The obverse blade is acid-engraved "Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit" (“In Memory of My Service Period”) inside a banner flanked on both sides by oak leaf branches and Wehrmacht- (Armed Forces) style German national eagles clutching mobile swastikas
There is a three-colour cockade of Imperial Germany on the right side and a black and white cockade of Prussia on the left side

Constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of an eight pointed radiant star, the obverse with a central raised gilt medallion bearing a finely detailed gilt Griffin, surrounded by a ribbed silver ring, within a ring of red enamel bearing a raised gilt inscription of ALTIOR ADVERSIS (AGAINST ALL ODDS) and laurel leaf branches,
