Once thought to be a selection of Adonis amurensis, recent taxonomic work has shown this to be a hybrid between the diploid Adonis multiflora and the tetraploid (4 sets of chromosomes) Adonis ramosa. Like Adonis amurensis, Adonis 'Chichibu Beni' (Chichibu is a city in central Japan and Beni means red) opens as early as late January with semi double
