Between each cartridge in the belt was a brass strip, and every third strip was longer and extended past the front edge of the belt. The extra length was provided as a gauge to identify where the tip of the bullet should be. The strips were fixed to the belt with small brass rivets IMA has a very few of the tools and some original rivets and long strips.
